New lighthouse Saltstraumen in June 2005. It was built on the northeastern pier of the brigde about the straumen and replaced the old lighthouse Saltstraumen standing near by (lower picture).

The Saltstraumen is the world's strongest tidal current. Strongest outgoing current is exactly between high and low tide, strongest incoming between low and high tide. Every six hours approaching 400 mill cubicmetres streams through the only 150 metres wide strait between the Saltfjorden and the Skjerstadfjorden. The velocity of the water can reach up to 20 knots.
